World-renowned for its 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops nestled in gray and tan limestone, Valley of Fire State Park contains ancient, petrified trees and petroglyphs dating back more than 2,000 years. A Visitor Center provides exhibits on the geology, ecology, prehistory and history of the park and nearby region. Open year round, the park has numerous campsites equipped with shaded tables, grills and water, as well as many intriguing trails to tempt hikers.
Interestingly, Lake Mead is the largest manmade reservoir in the United States, spanning over 110 miles long in Nevada and Arizona. Lake Mead provides many types of recreation to locals and visitors. Activities include fishing, swimming, sunbathing, hiking and water skiing. Located just minutes from Las Vegas, Boulder Beach stretches more than a mile along the shoreline of the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead. The beach is popular for swimming, boating and sailing. Stay the night in the nearby campground or RV park, enjoy a picnic while viewing the lake and stroll along the easy trails.
Red Rock Canyon is located about 25 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip featuring a one-way 13-mile scenic drive, hiking and trails, plants and wildlife, geology, camping, cultural resources and much more. Spend the day and explore over 26 hiking trails at Red Rock National Park. The Visitor Center offers information and interpretation about recreation opportunities. The facility also features indoor and outdoor exhibits and a book and gift store.
Mount Charleston is a year-round getaway for Las Vegas's residents and visitors, with a number of hiking trails, a modest ski area, a hotel and a small restaurant. The mountain, which is snow-capped more than half the year, can be seen from parts of the Las Vegas Strip when looking toward the west.
